Waypoint mapping and politics

Hi, we got an interesting question via email today, and it warrants a public explanation here:

I just registered, but it seems that there is a problem with my location…
I try to put Bethlehem; Occupied Palestinian Territory. 
it is written that it cannot coordinate!

Waypoint maps at Lightstalkers are built with Google Maps, which means we depend on Google to “know” where various place names are. Most of the time this works great; Google can figure out the coordinates for “Paris, France” no problem.

Unfortunately, Google doesn’t “recognize” Occupied Palestinian Territory as a mappable place, so Lightstalkers is going to say that it can’t find coordinates for this location. 

We’re working on a fix, but in the meantime you can do one of two things:

1) You can leave it — you won’t have a marker on your map for this particular location, but that’s the only consequence.

2) You can switch to a Google-recognized place name. In this example, that would be “Israel”.
